Pennsylvania Palms 

The former Union Iron Works Convalescent Hospital (also known as the Mission Bay Convalescent Hospital) is a historic resource that has been converted to 7 residential units.  The structure is a two-story over basement, reinforced concrete, Renaissance Revival-style hospital building constructed in 1916 for the employees of Bethlehem Steel, who worked at the Pier 70 shipyard.  The street façade has been preserved and restored and the interior reimagined for 2 one-story and 5 townhouse units.  Each of the units was composed around the exposed concrete columns and walls to create large open living spaces, focused on the views.  Interior floors and the roof were saw cut and skylights added to provide natural light into the 15 foot high interior spaces.  Private roof decks and second floor terraces were added to partake in the fantastic views of the San Francisco skyline, bay, and East Bay hills.  The 3 four-story Mexican Palm trees that tower over the project remained intact and inspired the addition of 2 new smaller palm trees flanking the front entry stairs.
